Bridges Built

The Gap Project so far…

Athletic Equipment Drive:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Gap Project collected gently used and new athletic equipment and artistic supplies from members of the community. We then distributed all items to local schools and organizations to help relieve the need for students to supply their own equipment to participate.

Street Side Story Time:

As a way to bring students back into the community and provide an opportunity to spend time with their peers after school closures due to COVID-19, The Gap Project hosted a series of summer story times. Each session was held outdoors in a local park and was free of cost, open to grades K-2. The reading list specifically emphasized topics of inclusion, diversity, celebration of individuality, and more to elevate the themes of current social justice events.

Fall Dance Series:

In Fall 2021, The Gap Project partnered with Empower Dance of Durham to provide free outdoor ballet classes at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The project is open to all Durham students in middle and high school and is supported by the Creative Futures Initiative at Carolina Performing Arts.

Holiday Art Supplies Drive:

From November 8 through December 10,2021, The Gap Project is partnering with the Art Therapy Institute of North Carolina to host a Holiday Art Supplies Drive on UNC Campus, partnering with six different campus locations. Reflecting on the year we all have had and the difficult semester UNC students are having, there is no better time to give back to local students and support mental health awareness in our community than this holiday season. All donations will be used to support the children’s programs at the Art Therapy Institute. Locations include Campus Y, Hill Hall, Kenan Music Building, Person Hall, Morrison Art Studio and UNC School of Social Work.

The building has just begun.
